Zoey always took Sundays off. She slept in, dressed in old sweats and treated herself to long, leisurely hours sipping coffee and reading the Sunday paper, cover to cover. Yet today, as she lazed on the sofa, she couldn’t seem to relax or concentrate on the paper, as she was still bothered by her conversation with Tina on Thursday night.

Her best friend had accused her of fooling herself, of missing out on life by steering clear of love. Zoey tapped her fingers idly against her lips and thought about her life.

Michael had hurt her badly when he’d left several years ago. After that she’d dated some, but her bad luck with men had led her to the wise decision that protecting her heart was the best and safest road to take. She’d stopped dating and immersed herself in work, which was both satisfying and fulfilling. She’d believed that was enough, that she was happy. But now, after an evening with Tina, radiant, joyous and in love…

With a sigh Zoey picked up the Sunday magazine. Compared to Tina, she wasn’t all that happy. Of course, Tina’s new love interest could very well break her heart, leaving her alone and blue. Tina knew that, had suffered through more than one painful breakup. Yet that hadn’t stopped her from once again taking a chance on love. Tony was worth the risk, she’d said.

Which brought things back to the original question of the day: Was Zoey missing out on life?

Of course you are, a tiny voice in her head scolded. Frowning, Zoey tossed aside the magazine. She’d started talking to herself. Wonderful. Maybe she needed some heavy-duty therapy of her own. The thought made her smirk. Now there was an interesting thought.

Or maybe what she needed had nothing to do with therapy. For some reason she thought of Cole with his hot, knowing looks and that cocky grin. Now why did he keep popping into her thoughts? She shook her head to clear her mind, but her body tingled, and for a moment she indulged in a fantasy that starred her and Cole and involved kisses and a whole lot more.

Talk about ridiculous. Restless and annoyed with herself, she jumped up and moved to the large, open living-room window. A balmy May breeze ruffled the curtains and perfumed the apartment with the heady, spring scents of lily of the valley and lilac, but Zoey barely noticed. Cole wanted Carla, even if they weren’t exactly a great match. But, hey, if he didn’t care, why should Zoey? After that special date yesterday, Cole and Carla were probably talking wedded bliss. No doubt the amazing factory, boat ride and picnic had wowed her.

Zoey didn’t want to think about Cole with Carla, who she pictured as a curvaceous, beautiful blonde, but scenes played through her mind in vivid detail. She imagined them on the beach, eating and laughing. Her fingers curled around the wooden window frame. The very thought of Cole holding that woman in his arms and nuzzling her neck made Zoey cringe.
